ECA Partner Spotlight: The Sophia Way

A community organization is providing women a place of hope

The Sophia Way envisions a community where all women have a place to call home. Since 2008, the organization has been supporting women on their journey from homelessness to safe and stable living.

The women who come to our shelters have many immediate needs – "Where can I sleep tonight?" "Where can I eat?" "Where can I shower and wash my clothes?" "Where can I store my belongings safely"? Many have deep emotional scars from trauma or abusive relationships. Some are unable to work due to physical disabilities.

Our shelters – Helen's Place and Sophia's Place – offer women a warm, safe space to rest, heal and rebuild their lives. Caring staff and case managers focus on their physical, mental, and financial well-being, using the guiding principles of trauma-informed care to build a compassionate relationship with each woman. This approach reduces further trauma and re-traumatization, emphasizes healing, and encourages them to develop stronger coping skills. We believe this approach makes all the difference in women having a better quality of living.

A generous community of donors and volunteers supports the Sophia Way with their time, talent, and treasure. We are grateful for the support of ECA in giving us a grant for our Client Assistance Fund that helps women with what they need to get housed and stay housed – including support to prevent evictions, pay for housing applications, and move-in costs. Partnerships like this enable The Sophia Way to be a place of hope and change for women in our community.

The Sophia Way’s annual (virtual) fundraiser Sheltering is on Wednesday, May 17 at noon. Register here.
